Hotel le Cep à Beaune

We stayed at Hotel Le Cep for the first night of our journey from the UK down to the south coast of France. We chose it mainly for its location--it was the perfect driving distance after the Eurotunnel--and because it offered secure parking. On arrival, we were able to park briefly at the main entrance, where we were warmly greeted by the staff. They helped us with our luggage, took our car keys, and parked the car in the secure car pa for us. Check-in was handled efficiently in the main building, after which we were escorted to our room. To our surprise, this involved stepping back outside, walking a few doors down the street, and entering through a separate doorway. From there, we passed along a corridor, went by an Indian restaurant, and climbed a set of beautiful spiral stairs to reach our room. The room itself was lovely--tastefully decorated, fairly modern, with plenty of storage space and a large bathroom featuring an over-bath shower. Our window looked out over the courtyard, which added a nice touch. The hotel's location in Beaune couldn't have been more central. Within just a five-minute walk we found ourselves in the heart of a gorgeous town, perfect for exploring and finding a spot for dinner. Although we only stayed for one night, we wished we could have lingered longer. Hotel Le Cep was a charming start to our trip and set the tone for the journey ahead.

Lovely traditional hotel...Apparently. Best leave parking through car to the staff... The reception looked like a cruise ship had docked, or a coach party arrived. Very disappointed to be told the restaurant was 'full', but they had made a reservation for us...at a burger joint in town! (Apparently the restaurant is a franchise, not associated with the hotel) Fortunately they 'managed to find two excellent restaurants during our two night stay. This is, in no way, a five star hotel.

In which world this Hotel was rated a 5 star hotel. It is barely a 3 star hotel. The only good thing about this hotel is its location. We travel a lot and we stay mostly in 5 star hotels, small ones, big, old, modern, old charming ones, we have been in all kinds. When I first walked in the lobby of Le cep, I was surprised how run down it was for a 5 star, no one came to help us with our luggage, there was only one person at reception. Then we went to our room, a suite, maybe one of the most expensive of the hotel, we had to go up some very dangerous stairs to get to our room. The stairs were slippery, dark and designed to have accidents, in fact I fell once. Our room was old looking, not very functional, and would say, ugly. The bathroom was spacious , but also old and averaged looking, the sink was broken, and it was no amenities other than the most necessary, nothing that made you feel like the luxury you paid for. Then I asked for a steamer, they don't have steamers or irons, but they offered iron service, I thought it was going to complementary, as they lack the good in the room, but then they charged me for it. Other remarks, the closet came with 4 hangers, they forgot to leave us water once, the night turn down service consisted of they just closing the drapes. They never replenished our soaps and shampoos. Good points, the courtyard is very nice. They supposedly have 24 bar service, towels and robes are soft. In general I would not recommend this hotel at all, find another 5 star hotel.
